Tax invoice checklist (Australia)
From the ATO’s rules on tax invoices:
- The words "tax invoice", shown prominently
- Your business name and ABN
- The date it was issued
- A description of what you sold, with quantity and price
- The GST amount (or "total price includes GST" when GST is exactly one-eleventh of the total)
- For sales of $1,000 or more: the buyer’s identity or ABN
If a customer asks for a tax invoice, the ATO says you must provide it within 28 days (except for sales of $82.50 or less including GST).

Quick answers
What does a tax invoice need in Australia?
Per the ATO, a tax invoice for a sale under $1,000 needs: the words "tax invoice", your identity and ABN, the date, what you sold (with quantity and price), the GST amount, and how much of each sale is taxable. For sales of $1,000 or more it must also show the buyer’s identity or ABN. This generator includes all of these when "Registered for GST" is ticked.
I’m not registered for GST. What invoice do I use?
Untick "Registered for GST". You then get a plain invoice with no GST line and a note that no GST has been charged. Include your ABN if you have one.
Can I show prices including GST?
Yes. Tick "Prices I enter already include tax" and the invoice shows the total with the GST included (one-eleventh of the total) instead of adding it on top.
