How to get more Google reviews (the honest way)

  1. Ask at the happy moment: when the job is done, the meal is cleared, or the tour boat is back at the dock.
  2. Make it one tap: put your review link on receipts, invoices and thank-you texts, and a QR code on the counter. Our free review QR code generator makes print-ready cards.
  3. Reply to every review: good and bad. People read the replies, and it shows you care.
  4. Never buy or bribe: Google treats incentives for reviews as fake engagement (Google’s help page).

Why your review count matters as much as your stars

Two businesses with 4.8 stars are not equal if one has 30 reviews and the other has 900. Customers trust volume, Google uses it when deciding who shows up in the map results, and AI assistants like ChatGPT lean on it when someone asks who to go to. That’s why the comparison above weighs both, the same way we rank our best plumbers in Geelong and best tours in Cairns lists.

Quick answers

How is a Google rating calculated?

It is the average of all your star ratings, shown rounded to one decimal place. So a business showing 4.5 has a real average somewhere from 4.45 to 4.54, which is why our results are estimates.

How many Google reviews do I need?

There is no magic number, but it is relative: you want more, and more recent, reviews than the businesses you compete with in your area. Use the comparison above with your real competitors to set a target.

Why does one bad review hurt so much?

With few reviews, each one moves the average a lot. At 20 reviews, a single 1-star review can drop a 5.0 to about 4.8. At 500 reviews it barely moves. Volume protects you.

Can I pay or offer discounts for reviews?

No. Google says offering incentives such as free or discounted goods or services in exchange for reviews is fake engagement and is strictly prohibited. Ask every happy customer instead, at the right moment.
